Darth Maul: Apprentice is a German Star Wars fan project from 2016. The short film by director Shawn Bu is about the completion of the training of Sith lord Darth Maul and is a prequel to Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace .

action

The Sith student Darth Maul is about to complete his training. On a lonely planet he studies his opponents and trains his own skills in order to be able to carry out the assignment of his master Darth Sidious to start a campaign of revenge against the Jedi . During his training, a camera drone stationed in the orbit of the planet reports an approaching spaceship. Maul, who wants to remain undetected, sets out to destroy the unwanted intruders before they discover his hiding place and report it. He discovers that these are a group of six Jedi who followed a lead. The Sith attacks an advanced Jedi scout and quickly defeats him. Due to the loss of contact, the remaining five Jedi rush over and a fierce lightsaber fight ensues . His training and aggressive fighting style enable the Sith to kill his opponents one after the other, despite their majority, until there are only one Jedi master and his Padawan student left. They manage to better adjust to the Sith and slightly injure Maul, whereupon he withdraws. The Jedi follow him, but run into a trap. Darth Maul overwhelms the student and can kill the Jedi master in a duel. Before Maul can finish off the student, however, one of her companions, believed to be dead, intervenes. The badly wounded Jedi cannot hold his ground against the Sith for long, but it is enough to allow the Padawan to escape. She is quickly caught by the Sith and has to face the inevitable duel, whereby the young student is not up to the trained Sith. When she is defeated on the ground, Maul hesitates to kill her. But the presence of his master's camera drone moves him to get rid of his last opponent. Darth Sidious is satisfied with the performance of his student and declares that his training has been completed.

Background and reception

The open sand areas of the Brunssummerheide served as the location for the final fight.

As part of his bachelor thesis in communication design at the FH Aachen , director Bu worked on the film for two years. The film was shot on a total of 18 days over a period of 13 months, including in the Teufelsschlucht in the southern Eifel and in the open sandy areas of Brunssummerheide in the Netherlands . About 70 people were involved in the production. According to Bus, he financed the film budget "in the lower five-digit range" himself.

In the first week after it was released on YouTube on March 5, 2016 , the film received more than five million views. On the Independent's website , Jacob Stolworthy describes Darth Maul: Apprentice as “really gripping” and “better than a number of Hollywood blockbusters”. According to Sebastian Honekamp at Welt Online , the film " does not have to hide from the original Star Wars films."
