Max Tsui

Max Tsui ( Chinese  徐耀宗 , Pinyin Xú Yàozōng , Jyutping Ceoi 1 Jiu 6 zung 1 , Cantonese  Tsui Yiu-Chung ; born October 29, 1979 in Munich ) is a German advertising director and cameraman .

Life

Tsui studied design in the camera department at the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences from 2004 to 2014 . One of his first camera works was the series Ninas Welt , the first mobisode and web series in Germany in 2006 . Shortly afterwards he was able to gain first successes at festivals with the short film Haltlos - No Second Opportunity (with Diane Willems and Marlon Kittel in the leading roles), which he had made under the direction of André Herrmann.

In 2015 he won several international advertising film awards with his diploma film Steampunk Coke , in which, in addition to the camera, he also directed and wrote the screenplay .

In collaboration with director Baris Aladag, Tsui realized several music video projects , such as those for Jean Michel Jarre and Philipp Dittberner , which were clicked millions of times on YouTube. Furthermore, at Aladag's request, he took over the artistic design of the “WDR Kurvenkänge”.

Working with director Shawn Bu , Tsui achieved one of his first viral successes with the Star Wars fan project Darth Maul: Apprentice . In addition to the artistic design of the large rotating blocks and studio days, Tsui also took on the organization and provision of the camera and lighting crew as well as the equipment. The film achieved several million clicks on YouTube and was awarded the Germany Web Video Prize in 2016 in the Best Video of The Year category.

In July 2016, filming began on the new funk series World of Wolfram , in which Tsui and Sebastian Fred Schirmer took over the camera for the entire first season. World of Wolfram has won several web film festivals internationally (including the Los Angeles Web Series Festival) and has been nominated many times.

Tsui made his first feature film in 2018 with Scorpion , an action thriller shot in Uzbekistan , Russia and Morocco . Directed by Muhlisa Azizova.

In 2018 he was a jury member at the 4th International ProLogue Film Festival in Uzbekistan .

As part of an artistic film project, Tsui took over the image design for North Rhine-Westphalia for the short film Re-Start in 2020 on the recommendation of director Florian Meimberg . Under stricter Corona security measures, Tsui also took over the artistic design of the 2020 summer block of the television series Die Pfefferkörner , directed by Daniel Drechsel-Grau, as DoP .
