The Secret of the Fortress (original title: Bir qalanın sirri , Russian Тайна одной крепости ) is a Soviet fairy tale film by Alisettar Atakischiev from 1961. It is based on a fairy tale from Azerbaijan .

action

A school class goes with their teacher on an excursion into a mountainous landscape in Azerbaijan. Here you not only visit the hydroelectric power station, but also an excavation site. One of the students knows that there has not always been water in this place, and the archaeologist tells the children one of the fairy tales about how water came to people:

Once there was an evil ruler on a fortress, Simnar-Khan, who together with his magician Gei Ges Kössa withheld the water from the people. This is prevented by a large rock by the river into the valley. The Khan, in turn, had his fortress built on the rock. Magician Gei Ges Kössa, in turn, has turned the flowers on the blooming mountain to stone. The good scientist Eldostu meets with the master and Kamran-Baba to put an end to the tyranny of Khan. Together with his student Metanet, he developed an elixir with which the rock of the Gei Ges Kössa can be transformed back into flowers. The master, in turn, wants to work with the local farmers and his apprentice Elschan to smash the rock that prevents the water from flowing into the valley. If both tasks are fulfilled, the skillful Eldostu is to be married to the clever Metanet.

Gei Ges Kössa now uses his magical powers to defeat his opponents. He has Eldostu arrested when he refuses to tell him the formula for the elixir. Eldostu destroys the only bottle of the elixir to prevent Gei Ges Kössa from figuring out the formula himself. The master is also arrested and kidnapped. A little later a stone statue appears on the rock and it is rumored that there is a dragon living above who turned the master into stone. The two new apprentices, Eldostus, Ady and Bydi, are also arrested. With a trick, Gei Ges Kössa succeeds in catching Metanet, who has previously hidden from his henchmen, but has come into contact with Elschan and organizes a liberation of her two masters. Only Elschan, with Kamran-Baba's help, sees through Gei Ges Kössa's ruse. He turns the prisoner Metanet into stone and turns Eldostus' arms to stone. Elschan manages to free Eldostu. In order to save his arms and to bring the transformed Metanet back to life, you need the elixir. However, this has to be put together from various herbs from a mountain, for which the necessary plant knowledge is required. Although he is reluctant at first, Elschan reads his knowledge continuously until he knows the language of animals and the essence of plants. The Belt of Wisdom donated by Eldostu now also fits him.

He succeeds in defeating Gei Ges Kössa in the mountains. In a duel, he also kills Simnar-Khan and frees Metanet. The master is saved by Ady and Bydi, who can now also prove to be brave. Ady had also proactively exchanged the bottle with the elixir for one with colored water, so that Eldostu broke the wrong bottle at the time. Ady has the real bottle with him and Eldostu's arms can now be saved. The farmers, in turn, work together to smash the stone and water flows down into the valley. Due to the death of Gei Ges Kössa, the previously stony landscape blossoms again.

The head of the excavation site ends his story. Metanet and Elschan also work on the construction site - the names of the legend are also present in the present.
