The Secret of the White Masks is a French television series based on the novel of the same name by Alexandre Dumas , produced in black and white in 1966 and broadcast in France. The German first broadcast took place a year later on ARD . The context of the series is the time of Napoleon Bonaparte towards the end of the 18th century.

The unrest of the French Revolution has not yet subsided when, at the time of the Directory, the mysterious brotherhood Les Compagnons de Jéhu set itself the goal of overthrowing the usurper Napoleon Bonaparte and the Bourbon Louis XVIII. to sit on the throne. Napoleon instructs his adjutant Roland de Montrevel to hunt down and expose the noble members of this brotherhood who rob stagecoaches with white masks and steal state funds. Roland is supported by his English friend Sir John Tanley. The leader of the unscrupulous brotherhood is the nobleman Morgan.
