life and career

Claude Giraud was the son of a gynecologist. One of his uncles ran a few cinemas in Clermont-Ferrand, where Claude Giraud liked to watch films even as a child and had the desire to become an actor. After successfully passing the school leaving examination, he moved to Paris to study literature. He attended numerous performances at the Théâtre National de Paris , where he auditioned for Henri Rollan on the recommendation of Pierre Fresnay . He completed his acting training first with Tania Balachova at the Théâtre du Vieux-Colombier , from 1957/58 at the École de la rue Blanche (École nationale supérieure des arts et techniques du théâtre ENSATT) with Jean Debucourt , Fernand Ledoux and Jean-Laurent Cochet . He completed his military service as a military librarian in Baden-Württemberg for 28 months and then returned to the conservatory in Paris, where he met Catherine Demanet (Marquand), who also studied acting. They married in 1963. He completed his training in Paris in 1962 as the only student to date with three first prizes (comedy, tragedy, modern drama). He was then engaged in the Comédie-Française , which he left after a few months, as he was only cast for small roles. In 1962 he was the first winner of the recently created Grand Prix Gérard-Philipe de la Ville de Paris and began a successful theater and film career.

In 1963 he played his first leading role as Capitaine Langlois in François Leterriers A King Alone based on the novel of the same name by Jean Giono , who also wrote the screenplay. The film was awarded the Grand prix du cinéma français . This was followed by the role of Oedipus in the film adaptation of Jean Cocteau's La machine infernale and Georges in Roger Vadim's star occupied Schnitzler -Adaptation The dance with Jane Fonda . In 1963 he made guest appearances with the Compagnie Marie Bell in Canada and the USA (Boston, Washington DC, Princeton and on New York's Broadway (theater) ). For his role of Hippolyte in Jean Racine 's Phèdre , he received the Theater World Award. In 1968 Phèdre was made into a film with Marie Bell and recorded on record. In the mid-1960s, Claude Giraud played the role of Philippe de Plessis-Bellieres in three Angélique films ( Angélique , Angélique, Part 2 and Angélique and the King ) alongside Michèle Mercier . Ä. in which he starred Morgan (Jacques de Sainte-Hermine), directed by Michel Drach . In the popular French children's series Sebastien parmi les hommes , he portrayed Sebastian's father, a horse breeder. Bernard Toublanc-Michel cast him in 1968 for the role of d'Aulnay in Adolphe ou l'âge tendre ( Tanja's lover ). The television series Les rois maudits (English: The unfortunate kings) based on Maurice Druon 's novel of the same name about the French monarchy in the 14th century, in which he played Sir Roger Mortimer, was a great success .

In 1972 he returned to the Comédie-Française , where he was accepted as sociétaire No. 460 in 1976 . Until 1982 he played numerous roles in which he proved his versatility, u. a. Christian in Cyrano from Bergerac ; Octavio in Les Caprices de Marianne; Antonio in What You Want ; Gargaret in Doit-on le dire?; Béralde in The Conceited Sick . With the Comédie-Française he also took part in the Avignon Festival (Oedipus of Sophocles in the title role and Edward IV in Richard III ). From 1983 to 1986 he joined the newly formed acting troupe of Jean-Claude Cochet at the Théâtre Hébertot , where he took on numerous leading roles. At the side of Louis de Funès he played the fictional Arab revolutionary leader Slimane in 1973 in The Adventures of Rabbi Jacob . The film was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in the Best Foreign Film category. In La guerre de pétrole n'aura pas lieu by Moroccan director Souheil Ben-Barka, he portrayed a young bureaucrat who exposes the corrupt machinations surrounding the oil business.
