Deceiving yourself is a French feature film from 1958 in the form of a time and moral picture of the youth of that time. Under the direction of Marcel Carné , a number of up-and-coming artists play, two of which would develop into big stars in the following decade: Jean-Paul Belmondo and Pierre Brice .

action

Paris, at the time this film was made (1958). At the center of the plot is a clique of young people who, predominantly from upper class or wealthy families, indulge themselves in sweet idleness, free love and petty criminal adventures. First of all, there is Robert Letellier, known by everyone as Bob, a sheltered student and the son of a successful businessman. Bob just graduated from college. He befriends Alain, a restless, nihilistic and cynical boy who has declared war on the supposed “philistine world” and has since gone his own way. Alain introduces Bob to his world, the world of the existentialists in Saint-Germain-des-Prés . At a mega party you get to know the young hostess Clo, like Bob, also from a wealthy family, who likes to drift and consistently withdraws from reality, as well as her best friend Michèle, called Mic, a beautiful brunette with doe eyes, whose social background is rather modest is to be designated. For them too, having barely fledged, personal independence away from the family, which is perceived as annoying, is the highest goal.

Although Clo immediately tears the comparatively shy Bob under the nail, he reveals more interest in the gentle mic. It turns out that the influence of the “life artist” Alain, who negates all norms, on the clique turns out to be quite harmful. Alains and Clos arrogance, Mic's sophistication - she wants a Jaguar sports car, and as soon as possible - and the rejection of all conventions - including criminal acts and the group criticism of Mic and Bob's awakening affection for one another, which is viewed as deeply "bourgeois" - Bringing considerable tension among the young people and the group to the edge of the abyss. Then, after a one-night stand, Bobs also becomes pregnant. He promises to want to marry her. Mic is shocked by this news and runs out of her best friend's house that evening. She jumps into the sports car her friends have worked hard for and spins away like mad. She is dazzled by the lights of an oncoming vehicle, a truck, and caught by this truck. Mic dies on the way to the hospital. The terrible events are the reason for Bob to completely rethink his life so far.

criticism

“After his almost cinematic homage to the romantic ' Children of Olympus ' ( Les Enfants du Paradis , 1944), director Marcel Carné descended to the children of a fully motorized, alcohol-driven, apparently sentiment-depleted Hades, to a young Parisian living world clique in Saint -Germain-des-Prés. This saganic generation from the middle of the century is - as Carné demonstrates a little slowly and significantly, but effectively - in its better specimens, despite or precisely because of its cleared inner life, as in need of love as the Carmelite Sisters from the ' Gifted Fear '. The director, who set out to discover the image of a new generation, found instead a quartet of fascinatingly talented young actors: Jacques Charrier, Andrea Parisy, Laurent Terzieff and above all Pascale Petit. So the film is a self-deception that is definitely worth watching. "

- Der Spiegel , issue 25 from June 17, 1959

“The film is from yesterday in an attempt to tear down the walls of social differences that allegedly torment these youth. In its sentimental end - also with the effects of a thriller (chase) - it even seems a little helpless. But the great technical mastery of this series of images and the passion with which the young players portray these little monsters is fascinating. A lot of shocking words that come fresh from their lips, because they have to be so completely uninhibited, would not be so easy for most adults. It may be that many of them will see young people with completely different eyes after this visit to the cinema. Poor youth ... "

- The time of August 14, 1959

“Marcel Carné, the director of ' Children of Olympus ', turns to contemporary problems and paints a gloomy picture of the post-war youth in France in the 1950s, infested with existentialism and nihilism. Due to the often exhausted and drastic description of a self-destructive rebellion at the time, it was heavily controversial among critics and the public. "
