The House without Laughing is a German silent film drama from 1923 by Gerhard Lamprecht . The famous screenwriter Henrik Galeen undertook one of his very rare trips in front of the camera in the lead role of a domestic tyrant.

action

The house without a laugh is the house of the William Blents family. The father of the family is a true tyrant and takes great pleasure in the deep suffering of others that he inflicts on them. The marriage with his wretched, intimidated and tolerant wife and the entire domestic peace in general suffer infinitely from this situation. Mrs. Blents son, who was once expelled from the house by the father, only dares to go into the house at night when he wants to visit his loving, gentle and suffering mother. Enid White, who was once brought to him as an orphan by her guardian William Blent, suffers deeply from this unbearable situation. She secretly loves Lester, but he doesn't know anything about it.

One day Mrs. Blent has no way out of this situation and brutally kills William out of sheer weariness. Nothing is like before afterwards. When Enid, who feels deeply sorry for Mrs. Blent, learns about this, she wants to protect the good-natured murderess and the beloved son Lester and wrongly confesses to the police that she herself committed the murder. Mrs. Blent passed away that night. In the end, Enid's selfless commitment is rewarded by Justitia: Enid's innocence is proven thanks to a testimony from Mrs. Blent's confessor, and the benevolent girl can finally fall into Lester's arms and become his wife.

Reviews

Paimann's film lists stated that the strength of this film “lies in the well-tempered interplay of the ensemble”.

“As a director, Lamprecht already has a feel for the little things in everyday life in which he senses an order that seems to be lost to him. He shows how an orange is peeled, a napkin is folded or a window is glazed. He has this recorded in real time, so that these scenes fall out of the narrative dramaturgy, but they contain the core of his narrative and cinematic interest. "
