The old song is the title of a song movie. which Karl-Otto Krause realized in 1919 in his own production and based on his own script. The synchronization process based on the Beck patent, which was developed in 1910, was used. Frank wrote in Film-Kurier No. 91 on January 11, 1920: “In the context of a simple, perhaps a little too sentimental plot, Karl Otto Krause composed an appealing film singspiel, skilfully using older songs and interweaving entire opera scenes. At the center of the piece is a pair of singers and lovers who, through no fault of their own, get into misery and perish due to a chronic throat disease of the tenor. "

“The focus of the now only rudimentary dramatized events of films like“ Das alten Lied ”(1919)…, in which entire opera scenes were often reproduced, were mostly tenors or operetta divas who had to exist episodically interspersed love adventures between their appearances . ”. According to Wedel, such singing / vocal films from the silent film era gave rise to the later singer and tenor films of the early sound films.
