Dasylirion occidentalis is a species of the genus Dasylirion in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). An English common name is "Sotol".

description

Dasylirion occidentalis forms a trunk 40 to 80 cm high. The smooth, thickened, variable, finely waxy, bluish, dense leaves are 80 to 100 cm long and 8 to 16 mm wide. The fine, irregularly arranged radial spines can be seen on the leaf margins.

The panicley woody inflorescence becomes 3 to 4 m high. The numerous flowers are yellow. The flowering period extends from May to August.

The egg-shaped capsule fruits contain a seed and are 5.5 to 6 mm long and 3.5 to 6 mm wide. The triangular seeds are 3 to 3.5 mm long and 2.5 mm wide.

Distribution and systematics

Dasylirion occidentalis is distributed in Mexico in Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Jalisco and Guanajuato at altitudes from 1900 to 2300 m. The species grows in desert areas in open, flat terrain, on stony slopes together with Yucca decipiens Agave durangensis and various Opuntia species.

It was first described as Dasylirion acrotriche var. Occidentalis in 1994 by David John Bogler in his dissertation. Fritz Hochstätter elevated the variety to the rank of a species in 2011.

The rare Dasylirion occidentalis is a member of the Glaucophyllum section . The long, smooth, variable leaves with fine, bushy tips are typical. Their appearance is similar to Dasylirion parryanum . Dasylirion durangense grows in the northern range . In this region there are intermediate forms of the two species.

Dasylirion occidentalis is little known.
