Dasylirion quadrangulatum is a species of Dasylirion in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). The specific epithet quadrangulatum means '(Latin quadrangulatus) with four edges'. An English common name is "Sotol Perilla, Junquillo, Vara".
description
Dasylirion quadrangulatum forms a woody, strong trunk up to 300 cm in height. The square, variable, smooth, green, dense leaves are 80 to 90 cm long and 8 to 9 mm wide at the base. The end tips are thin / needle-shaped.
The panicley, woody, 5 to 7 cm thick, massive inflorescence becomes 3 to 7 m high. The numerous flowers are white to cream in color. The flowering period extends from March to April.
The elliptical to egg-shaped capsule fruits contain 1 to 2 seeds and are 7 mm long and 5 to 6 mm wide. The triangular to elongated seeds are 2.5 mm long and 2 mm wide.
Distribution and systematics
Dasylirion quadrangulatum is locally distributed in Mexico in the south of the state of Nuevo Leon and in the southwest of Tamaulipas at altitudes of 1800 to 2000 m. It grows in desert areas on stony slopes or in flat, bushy terrain, associated with Yucca carnerosana , Agave lechuguilla , Agave striata and other species.
The first description was in 1879 by Sereno Watson .
The rare Dasylirion quadrangulatum is a member of the Quadrangulatum section . The strong, up to 3 m high trunk with the imposing, up to 7 m high inflorescence is characteristic. The variable, square, green, dense leaves with needle-shaped end tips are typical. The species is similar to Dasylirion longissimum , but differences are e.g. B. can be seen in the leaf structure.
Dasylirion quadrangulatum is little known.
