Dasylirion treleasei is a species of the genus Dasylirion from the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). An English common name is "Trelease Sotol".

description

Dasylirion treleasei forms a stem 50 to 200 cm in height. The square, stiff, smooth, thickened, variable, green and dense leaves are 70 to 80 cm long and 10 to 14 mm wide at the base. The variable, fine radial spines can be seen on the leaf margins.

The panicley, woody inflorescence becomes 3 to 4 m high. The numerous flowers are cream-colored. The flowering period extends from July to August.

The egg-shaped capsule fruits contain a seed and are 6 to 7 mm long and 5.0–6.5 mm wide. The triangular seeds are 3.0 to 3.5 mm long and 2.5 mm wide.

Distribution and systematics

Dasylirion treleasei is distributed in Mexico in San Luis Potosi, Hidalgo and Queretaro in a limited area at altitudes of 1400 to 1700 m. The species grows in desert areas in open, flat terrain and on stony slopes, associated with Agave striata and various Opuntia species.

It was first described as Dasylirion longissimum var. Treleasei in 1998 by David John Bogler , who already referred to the species in his dissertation from 1994. Fritz Hochstätter elevated the variety to the rank of a species in 2011.

The rare Dasylirion treleasei is a member of the Quadrangulatum section . The stiff, square leaves are typical. Its appearance is similar to that of Dasylirion quadrangulatum , but differences in leaf structure and flower phenology can be seen.

Little is known about the ecology of Dasylirion treleasei .
