Thysochromis is a genus of fish from the family of cichlids (Cichlidae), which grows in tropical West Africa from the Ivory Coast ( Bia , Comoé ) via Benin ( Ouémé ) to the wooded Nigerian lowlands ( Ogun , Oshun , Niger Delta , Ethiop , Calabar , Great Kwa River and Lower Cross River ), as well as in the Ogooué (Gabon) and Kouilou (Republic of the Congo) basin.

features

Thysochromis species are 7.0 to 8.5 cm long. Their body is egg-shaped, high back and clearly flattened on the sides. The body height is 35.8 to 47.0% of the standard length , the head length is 31.7 to 40.2% of the standard length. The forehead line is steeper than the lower profile line of the head. The mouth runs obliquely downwards, is small, terminal and has three to five rows of teeth. The teeth of the outer row are conical, single-pointed and evenly distributed. The tail fin stalk is short and taller than it is long.

The species of the genus were originally in the genus Pelmatochromis found the throat Dachs, the missing differ from these but by a continuous protuberance Mikrobranchiospinen on the second, third and fourth branchial arches and the absence of the typical Tiapia - or Pelmatochromis -Flecks on the soft-rayed Part of the dorsal fin. The first two characteristics put the genus in the relationship with Chromidotilapia (tribe Chromidotilapiini).

Thysochromis species are cave breeders and form pair bonds during the breeding season.
