The Datillo palm lily ( Yucca valida ) (common names in other languages: Palma Yucca, Datillo Yucca) is a species of palm lily ( Yucca ) in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).
description
The solitary, tree-shaped and branching Datillo palm lily reaches a height of 2 to 12 meters. The stiff, smooth, green to yellow-colored 0.2 to 0.5 meter long leaves form variable fibers on the leaf edges.
The dense inflorescence that begins between the leaves becomes 0.5 to 0.8 meters long. The fragrant, white to cream-colored, spherical flowers have a length and a diameter of about 2 to 5 cm. The flowering period extends from March to April.
Despite its geographical isolation and climatic conditions (Pacific fog) on the Baja California peninsula, the Datillo palm lily is related to Yucca filifera and Yucca decipiens .
distribution
The Datillo palm lily grows endemically in Mexico in Baja California in flat, stony terrain at altitudes between 200 and 850 meters. This species is often associated with Yucca whipplei subsp. eremica , Echinocereus lindsayi , Echinocereus ferreirianus , Pachycereus pringlei , Idria columnaris , various agave and opuntia species as well as palm species.
