David Abbott

David Abbott (born October 11, 1938 in London , † May 17, 2014 ibid) was a British copywriter and manager in advertising .

Life

Abbott grew up in Hammersmith , south west London, where his father ran a hardware store near Goldhawk Road underground station . After a year in boarding school, he attended Southall Grammar School in London and received a scholarship to study history at Merton College , Oxford . However, he dropped out of college after his father was fatally ill with lung cancer. He began his career as a copywriter at Kodak before joining the advertising agency Mather & Crowther under David Ogilvy . He found his next job in 1966 at DDB Worldwide headquarters in New York City . From there he returned to England after three years as Managing Director of the London branch.

In 1971 Abbott became self-employed as a co-founder of the French Gold Abbott agency . The Abbott Mead Vickers (AMV) agency was founded in 1978 and worked for clients such as Volvo, Sainsbury's, Ikea, Civas Regal, The Economist, Yellow Pages and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA). In 1991 the New York agency BBDO took a stake in AMV. Since then the Abbott Mead Vickers agency has been called BBDO . It is one of the largest agencies in the world with representations in 80 countries. One of the distinguishing features of the agency is that it does not accept advertising contracts for toys or tobacco products. Abbott retired from AMV in 1998 as chairman and creative director.

Abbott published his first novel The Upright Piano Player in 2010 , which was published by dtv in Germany in 2011. He was working on his second novel when he died. He was a hobby gardener and often attended the test cricket games at venues such as The Oval and Lord's Cricket Ground in London. He was a fan of London football club Millwall FC from the East End of London.

Abbot died after heart surgery in London's Royal Brompton Hospital . He left behind his wife, a daughter, three sons and eight grandchildren.
