David A. Leigh
David Alan Leigh (born May 31, 1963 ) is a British chemist and pioneer in nanosciences .
Life
Leigh earned a bachelor's degree in 1984 and a Ph.D. from Fraser Stoddart at the University of Sheffield in 1987. in chemistry . As a postdoctoral fellow , he worked at the National Research Council of Canada in Ottawa . In 1989 he became a lecturer in organic chemistry at the University of Manchester . In 1998 he was appointed Professor of Synthetic Chemistry at the University of Warwick , before being appointed Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Edinburgh in 2001 . Since 2012 he has been Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Manchester.
Leigh has a daughter.
Act
Leigh's group is concerned with the design and synthesis of structures at the molecular level, including catenanes , rotaxanes and molecular knots , as well as very strong hydrogen bonds that can be used to influence the function and properties of synthetic molecular machines - including Brownian motors , nanomotors , the be driven with Brownian motion .
