David August Brauns

David August Brauns (born August 1, 1827 in Braunschweig , † December 1, 1893 in Gandersheim ) was a German geoscientist .

Life

Brauns was a private lecturer at the Friedrichs University in Halle-Wittenberg . From December 5, 1879 to December 31, 1881 he was employed by the Ministry of Education of the Japanese Government . He taught geology and paleontology with a focus on features of metal and stone tools at the University of Tokyo . Brauns is considered a pioneer of modern geosciences in Japan.

Brauns' wife was the writer Caroline Wilhelmine Emma Brauns , b. Eggers (1836-1905).

In addition to his geological activities, David Brauns collected Japanese fairy tales and legends , which were published in an anthology in 1885.

Brauns returned from Japan with his wife to Halle adS in 1881 and resumed his work at the university there.
