David Azarian

David Azarian (born March 12, 1952 in Yerevan , † March 29, 2003 in Stoneham , Massachusetts ) was a jazz pianist from Armenia who worked in the United States from the late 1980s.

David Azarian's father was a music teacher and woodwind player ; He had classical piano training from the age of seven and won a piano competition at the age of twelve. He came to jazz under the impression of Willis Conover's radio broadcasts on the Voice of America . In his early twenties he became a member of the Soviet Composers Union. He formed a jazz trio with whom he toured Europe and the Soviet Union until he was given the chance to visit the United States. He came to Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1989 and has since performed frequently in jazz clubs in the Boston area ; he has also given concerts at New York's Carnegie Hall , Birdland and Blue Note . He mostly played with bassist John Lockwood . He recorded a few albums a. a. with his own compositions and taught piano at the Berklee College of Music . Azarian died in March 2003 as a result of a traffic accident.
