David Berlinski (born February 5, 1942 in New York City ) is an American mathematician .

Life

David Berlinski received his PhD in philosophy from Princeton University and worked briefly as a research assistant and a kind of postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Biology at Columbia University . He has taught philosophy, mathematics and English at Stanford University , Rutgers University , the City University of New York and the Sorbonne, among others , and has research stays at the IIASA in Laxenburg and at the IHES near Paris .

Berlinski has published works on systems analysis, differential topology , theoretical biology , analytical philosophy and the philosophy of mathematics, as well as three novels, as well as generally understandable books on mathematical and scientific history topics. His essays have appeared in Commentary Magazine , Forbes ASAP , the Boston Review and the Discovery Institute in Seattle , the organization of the most important exponents of intelligent design .

Berlinski worked with Marcel Schützenberger on a mathematical critique of Darwinism . A staunch opponent of the theory of evolution, he is a Fellow of the Center for Science and Culture at the Discovery Institute.

criticism

In his article The Deniable Darwin (1996), which appeared in Commentary magazine, Berlinski was critical of the theory of evolution. The sudden appearance of many species during the Cambrian explosion , the lack of fossils to prove transitions , the evolution of the eye, the evolution of the sharks would be, among other things, evidence that would speak against the theory of evolution. The science historian Ronald Numbers assigned this article to the intelligent design movement. The philosopher Daniel Dennett called the article bullshit .

Berlinski's book The Deniable Darwin has been criticized by Eugenie Scott , Executive Director of the National Center for Science Education .

In the movie

In the documentary Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed by Ben Stein , Berlinski is interviewed about the theory of evolution and makes very negative comments about the evolutionary biologist and atheist Richard Dawkins . This is very clever, but reminds him of a "reptile".
