David "Dave" Aaron Borrelli (born January 4, 1981 in Sault Ste. Marie , Ontario ) is a former Italian - Canadian ice hockey player who was last active for Asiago Hockey in the Serie A league until the end of the 2014/15 season .
Career
Borrelli, who was born and raised in Canada to Italian immigrants, began his career as a hockey player with the Sault Ste. Marie North Stars. During his time there, he was named the fairest player in the Air Canada Cup . He then played for the Soo Thunderbirds in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League. In 2002 he moved to the college team at Mercyhurst University , the Mercyhurst Lakers , for which he was active in the NCAA until 2006 . After brief stints with the Reading Royals and the Cincinnati Cyclones , the striker was under contract for a year with the Fresno Falcons , who like the two aforementioned teams play in the ECHL , and played 55 games there. In 2007 he went to the Italian first division club Asiago Hockey , whose team captain he was from 2011 to 2015. With the team from Veneto he won the Italian championship in 2010, 2011 and 2013 , and in 2013 also the Supercoppa .
Borrelli has also had an Italian passport since March 13, 2013, so that it no longer falls under the Serie A foreign contingent.
International
Borrelli made his debut for the Italian national team in November 2012 as part of games in the Euro Hockey Challenge , although he did not yet have Italian citizenship at the time. At the World Cup in April 2013 he reached second place with the Italian team in Group A of Division I and thus immediately returned to the top division. He contributed two goals to the promotion - one each in the 4-0 opening win against South Korea and in the 4-1 win against Japan . He then took part in the 2014 World Cup in the top division. He completed eighteen international matches for the Italian national team.
