Life

David Brentel was the third child (first son) from his father's marriage to his first wife Barbara. He learned his craft from his father, and his painting style corresponds perfectly to his. On May 9, 1580, David Brentel married Brigitta Neudthardt from Lauingen. From this marriage came the son Conrad (* February 23, 1581), who also became a painter. In contrast to his father, David Brentel stayed in Lauingen, where he worked his entire life - mainly as a coat of arms and miniature painter .

Brentel initially rented his apartment on Marktgasse and since 1586 in his own house on Hüebersgasse . His tax payments from 1587 and 1589 (3 lb 9 ß ) suggest that there was no shortage of jobs and that his income was more than sufficient. Brentel enjoyed a reputation in Lauingen and was accepted into the Lauingen council.

Brentel's work is largely lost. The two family books that are preserved in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum contain works that include coats of arms, portraits, allegorical figures, scenes from Roman history and from the New Testament. You prove his skills as a high-quality portrait miniature painter (Weihenmayer-Stammbuch) and as a good coat of arms painter (Reutter-Stammbuch). He is also assigned a series of ten etchings with passion scenes after Albrecht Dürer (1592/93).
