From 1650 to 1655 Clarkson was principal at Crayford , Kent . At the same time he married a Miss Holcroft in 1651. From 1656 to 1661, Clarkson served as Rector of Mortlake , Surrey . In 1661 he became an assistant to Samuel Clarke in St. Benet Fink, London, where he lost his position as a nonconformist in 1662 due to the Act of Uniformity . As a result, he was forced to work in silence wherever he could. He was busy studying and writing. After the Royal Declaration of Indulgence , he became pastor of the Presbyterian - independent congregation in Mortlake in 1672. In 1682, he was called as a colleague of John Owen in his parish in Leadenhall Street in London. The following year, after Owen's death, he became the sole pastor of that ward and served in that office until his death on June 14, 1686.
