David Cooney

David John Cooney (born April 29, 1954 in London , England ) is an Irish diplomat .

Cooney studied politics and history at Keele University . In 1976 he received his Bachelor of Arts with distinction. Cooney has now started working in the Irish Department of Agriculture in Dublin as an Executive Officer . In 1978 he moved to the Department of Public Service, also located in Dublin, where he worked as an administrative officer until 1979 . He then moved in 1979 to the Irish Ministry of Foreign Affairs ( Department of Foreign Affairs ). After holding various positions as Third Secretary, Cooney served as Secretary at the Irish Embassy to the Holy See from 1981 to 1985 .

His further diplomatic career, in which he held various posts, took him to the Irish embassies in Vienna , Brussels and Paris, among others . From 2000 to 2001 he was Deputy Permanent Representative of Ireland to the United Nations in New York City with the rank of Ambassador . In 2005 he replaced Richard Ryan as Permanent Representative of Ireland to the United Nations in New York City. He himself held this office until 2007 and was then replaced by John Paul Kavanagh . Cooney has now become the new Irish Ambassador to the United Kingdom and held this post from 2007 to 2009. Cooney has now returned to Ireland to become Secretary General in the Irish Foreign Office. In the same year he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Keele University.

Cooney is married with four children, a son and three daughters.
