John Paul Kavanagh

John Paul Kavanagh (born March 12, 1956 ) is an Irish diplomat .

Life

Kavanagh graduated from University College Dublin and received his Bachelor of Arts (Hons) degree in Modern History and French Literature in 1977 . After completing his studies, Kavanagh joined the State Department and has held various positions over the years. Among other things, he was the third secretary at the Irish Embassy in Beijing from 1979 to 1982 .

From 1996 to 1998 he was Head of the United Nations Office in Tokyo .

From 2004 to 2006, Kavanagh served with the rank of ambassador as a representative to the Political & Security Committee of the European Union in Brussels . From 2006 to 2007 he was the permanent representative of Ireland to the United Nation in Geneva and to the WTO . In 2007 he replaced David Cooney as Ireland's permanent representative to the United Nations in New York . Two years later, Kavanagh moved to the office of the Irish Ambassador to France , with simultaneous accreditation in Monaco . Anne Anderson , who he replaced , became the new permanent representative of Ireland to the United Nations in New York. Kavanagh himself held the post until 2013.

He has been the Irish Ambassador to the People's Republic of China since 2013 and is also accredited as a non-resident ambassador to Mongolia .

Kavanagh is married and has two sons. He is a Grand Officer of the Ordre national du Mérite .
