David Emmanuel Jack

Sir David Emmanuel Jack , GCMG , MBE (* 16 July 1918 in Victoria Village, St. Vincent and the Grenadines ; † 18 July 1998 in Old Montrose, St. Vincent ) was a politician of the New Democratic Party (NDP) from St Vincent and the Grenadines, who was Minister several times and between 1989 and 1996 Governor General of St. Vincent and the Grenadines .

Life

After attending school, Jack graduated from La Salle Extension University (LSEU) and on his return worked first as a teacher and then as an accountant before setting up a construction company in the private sector in 1943. For his service to the St. Vincent community , he became a member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) on January 1, 1975 . He joined the New Democratic Party (NDP) and was elected to the Legislative Assembly ( House of Assembly ) in 1984. After the NDP's simultaneous election victory, Prime Minister James Fitz-Allen Mitchell appointed him Minister for Housing, Labor and Community Development in his cabinet in 1984 . After a government reshuffle, he was Minister of Health in Mitchell's cabinet from 1986 to 1989. In May 1989, he resigned from his seat in parliament.

On September 20, 1989 Jack succeeded Henry Harvey Williams Governor General of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and held this post until June 1, 1996, when Charles Antrobus succeeded. On January 22, 1991 he was raised to the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (GCMG), whereby he led the name suffix "Sir".
