David Hoeschelius

David Höschel and Latinized David Hoeschelius (born April 8, 1556 in Augsburg ; † October 19, 1617 ibid) was a German humanist , philologist, teacher and librarian.

As the son of poor parents, he attended St.-Anna-Gymnasium with Hieronymus Wolf († 1580) and Simon Fabricius (1533–1593) and the Lauinger Gymnasium illustrious with Nikolaus von Reusner and Martin Ruland the Elder , where he mainly learned the Greek language and learned literature. From 1577 he studied with Gregor Bersman in Leipzig , received his master's degree there in 1581, returned to Augsburg, where he became a teacher, later also rector of the grammar school and head of the Augsburg city library made famous by Hieronymus Wolf.

In both of his offices he was supported by the mathematician Georg Henisch . He was in close contact with Joseph Justus Scaliger . In conjunction with Joachim Jungius and Christoph Helwig , he tested new pedagogical methods. The patrician Markus Welser supported him in his studies of Greek literature.

He became known through the first edition of the "Library" ( Myriobiblon ) of Patriarch Photios I.
