David H. Auston

David Henry Auston (born November 14, 1940 in Toronto ) is an American physicist who deals with ultrafast optics and optoelectronics .

Auston graduated from the University of Toronto with a bachelor's degree in 1963 and a master's degree in 1964. In 1969 he received his doctorate in electrical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley , and then went to Bell Laboratories , where he studied lasers and nonlinear optics and solid state physics and in 1982 became department head in the physics division of the laboratory. From 1987 he was Professor of Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics (with responsibility for research into ultrafast dynamic phenomena) at Columbia University . In 1990/91 he headed the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics. From 1990 to 1994 he was Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science there. From 1994 to 1999 he was the Herman Brown Professor of Engineering at Rice University and Provost. From 1999 to 2001 he was President of Case Western Reserve University . From 2002 to 2009 he was President of the Kavli Foundation . In 2009 he became Associate Director of the Institute for Energy Efficient Materials (CEEM) at the University of California, Santa Barbara .

Auston researched in particular in the field of picosecond and femtosecond optics with applications in nonlinear optics and solid state physics. He was one of the founders of ultrafast optoelectronics, which researches dynamic electronic properties of materials with high time resolution.

In 1985 he received the RW Wood Prize and the 1990 Quantum Electronics Award of the IEEE for pioneering contributions and fundamental work in the field of picosecond optoelectronics and ultrafast optical phenomena . In 1991 he received the Morris E. Leeds Award from the IEEE.

Auston is a Fellow of the American Physical Society , the IEEE, and the Optical Society of America . He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences , the National Academy of Engineering and, since 1992, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

He has been a US citizen since 1987.
