David Kofler (born February 13, 1922 in Olang ; † March 13, 2012 in Bruneck ) was the first director of the German Education Authority in South Tyrol from 1975 to 1987.

Childhood and youth

Kofler was born on a farm in Mitterolang. He spent the first years of school in his hometown. Then he attended the Vinzentinum grammar school in Brixen and moved to the Paulinum Episcopal grammar school in Schwaz . Before taking his final exams, he was drafted into the German armed forces ; it was followed by four years at the front. In 1945 - after the end of the war - Kofler graduated from the secondary school in Brixen and began studying classical philosophy at the University of Innsbruck ; In 1949 he received his doctorate. In 1952 he obtained the corresponding title at the University of Padua because the Austrian degree had not been recognized in Italy.

Professional background

After teaching German, Latin, Greek, history and geography at the humanistic grammar school in Bruneck for several years , he became director of the secondary school and didactic head of the lyceum in 1959/1960. He was able to convince the municipality, the state and the Ministry of Education to recognize the Humanistic Gymnasium in Bruneck, which at that time was still a branch of Merano , as a separate school. His diplomatic skills and his special organizational skills were already noticed on the occasion. In October 1968, South Tyrol's deputy head of school, Fritz Ebner, resigned for health reasons. At the suggestion of Provincial Councilor Anton Zelger , Kofler was appointed his successor; In 1969 he officially accepted the new post of deputy head of the school administration. This year, full responsibility for the school in South Tyrol still rests with the head of the Italian school administration, Alfio Cozzi.

In 1972 the Second Statute of Autonomy came into force in South Tyrol. From this point on it was possible to set up an independent school system. In 1975 the three school authorities were established: an Italian, a German and a Ladin with three different heads. Kofler became the first head of the German Education Authority. In the years that followed, the education system in South Tyrol laid the legal foundations for today's school world with permanent positions, curricula, directorates and different school types and levels. In the fall of 1987, Kofler retired and continued to teach Latin and philosophy at the Vincentinum for four years .

Part-time engagement and private life

David Kofler was a member of the executive committee of the Athesia media company for more than 40 years ; from 1959 he was on the supervisory board for seven years and a member of the management board until 2003. For ten years, Kofler was chairman of the KVW in Pustertal.

Kofler was married to his wife Martina († 1989) for 32 years and had three children with families.
