David Lopez (born November 24, 1977 in Nogales , Mexico ; † July 6, 2017 there ) was a Mexican boxer . Among other things, he was the 2011 WBA World Championship challenger in the light middleweight division.

Career

David Lopez made his professional debut on May 18, 1995. In August 1999 he won the Mexican light heavyweight championship against Manuel Verde and in October 1999 the NABA title of the WBA against David Méndez, former WBO World Championship challenger of Lonnie Bradley .

In July 2000 he lost to the later WBA world champion Maselino Masoe , but won the Mexican championship again in February 2001 against Eduardo Ayala, whom he had defeated in two previous matches. Against Fernando Zúñiga, he also won the IBA America's middleweight title in July 2003 and defeated the previously undefeated Lonnie Bradley in November 2003 and Jerson Ravelo in April 2004, who was also undefeated. On August 8, 2004, he defeated Quirino García in the fight for the IBA world middleweight title, but lost him in the first defense to Fulgencio Zuñiga.

In May 2005 he defeated Danny Perez when he won the IBA Americas title again and in June 2006 the later WBC World Championship challenger Epifanio Mendoza, making him the title holder of the NABF middleweight division. In March 2007 he was able to defeat Rocky Montoya in the fight for the WBC Latin American Championship in the middleweight division. In August 2007, he also beat former WBA World Cup challenger Larry Marks.

In June 2008 he defeated the undefeated Michael Walker and in August 2008 Billy Lyell, who was the 2010 World Cup challenger to the German IBF World Champion Sebastian Sylvester . In October 2008 he was again Latin American champion of the WBC middleweight against Samuel Miller. With further victories against Ossie Duran and Saul Roman he was Caribbean champion of the WBC and qualified for a World Cup eliminator of the WBA against Michel Rosales, which he won on March 19, 2011.

On June 11, 2011, he boxed against Austin Trout for the WBA World Light Middleweight Championship, but lost the fight on points. Then he played only six fights, of which he could only win two. Among other things, he lost against Jose Uzcategui .

In July 2017, David Lopez was found shot dead in a vehicle in Nogales. The murder case is one of a series of fatal violent crimes with a similar sequence against Mexican boxers in their home country: Between December 2016 and June 2018, World Cup challengers Alejandro González junior and Gilberto Parra , as well as Olympian Raúl Castañeda, were shot dead in their vehicles.
