Raúl Castañeda (* 20th September 1982 in Guaymas , Mexico , † 6. September 2017 in La Paz , Mexico) was a Mexican boxer in the flyweight .

Career

Raúl Castañeda won 2003 with victories against Carlos Tamara and McWilliams Arroyo the qualifying tournament for participation in the Pan American Games in 2003, where he achieved a bronze medal. After victories against Juan Reveco and Winston Méndez , he had reached the semi-finals, where he was eliminated this time against Carlos Tamara.

In May 2004 he reached the semi-finals of the Acropolis Cup in Greece with a win against Atagün Yalçınkaya , where he was defeated by Yan Barthelemí and won bronze. In June 2004 he won the Titan Games in Atlanta with a final win against Rau'Shee Warren without a fight .

In the American Olympic qualification in 2004 he had reached the final against Sébastien Gauthier and César Seda and thus qualified for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens . There he lost in the round of 16 against Sergei Kazakow .

Raúl Castañeda was shot dead by strangers in his vehicle in September 2017. The murder case is part of a series of fatal violent crimes with a similar sequence against Mexican boxers in their home country: Between December 2016 and June 2018, World Cup challengers Alejandro González junior , David Lopez and Gilberto Parra were also shot in their vehicles.
