David McKee (2011)

David McKee (* 1935 in Devon ) is a British children's author and illustrator .

Life

He began drawing cartoons while studying at Plymouth College of Art and Design and worked for Punch , Reader's Digest and the Times , before becoming known as a freelance painter and picture book artist.

His first book Two Can Toucan was published in 1964. His numerous picture books for children and his book series are internationally successful and are published in over 20 countries. He developed numerous film projects for the BBC .

The most famous and successful figure created by David McKee is Elmar, the brightly checked elephant. The picture book was published in England in 1969 and was translated into German by Hans Georg Lenzen. In his adventures Elmar the elephant experiences again and again what it is like to be different - namely colorful. It is now also available as a plush figure and patchwork template .
