Sir David Murray RA (* 29. January 1849 in Glasgow , Scotland ; † 14. November 1933 in Marylebone , England ) was Scottish landscape painter .

Life

Murray was the son of the shoemaker James Murray and initially worked in a trading company in Glasgow. He attended evening painting classes with Robert Greenlees at the Glasgow School of Art . From around 1875 he began to paint himself. He went to London in 1882, where he enjoyed his first successes. The painting My Love has gone a-Sailing , which he exhibited in 1884, was acquired by the Tate Gallery . On January 25, 1905 he was elected a full member of the Royal Academy of Arts , in 1917 he became president of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colors and in 1918 he was knighted. During his stay in London, Murray stayed at the Millais studios on Portland Place. His early pictures mostly showed Scottish landscapes, later the motifs came more from the south of England or from the continent.

His works are exhibited in various British museums, including the Royal Academy and the Royal Scottish Academy .
