David S. Landes

David Landes (* 29. April 1924 in New York as David Saul country ; † 17th August 2013 in Haverford , Pennsylvania ) was an American economic historian .

life and work

David S. Landes, born in New York City in 1924, was professor emeritus of economics at Harvard University and retired professor of history at George Washington University . In 1953 he received his Ph. D. from Harvard University .

According to Toni Pierenkemper, his book The Unleashed Prometheus is a "standard work on the industrialization of Western Europe with a special focus on technological innovations".

Landes died on August 17, 2013 at the age of 89.

Honors and memberships

Landes was an elected member of numerous scientific academies and associations, including the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1967 , the American Philosophical Society in 1982 and the National Academy of Sciences in 1983. In 1977 he became a corresponding member of the British Academy . He received six honorary doctorates. In 2004 he received the Leonardo da Vinci Medal .
