David "Davie" Weir (born August 29, 1863 in Aldershot , England , † December 1, 1933 in Bolton , England) was an English football player and coach .

Player career

As a player, Weir started his career with Hampton, Maybole FC, Glasgow Thistle and Hallwell. He then played in the newly formed Football League in 1888 with the Bolton Wanderers , his first goal he scored on September 22, 1888 against the Preston North End, who were known at the time as the invincible .

Weir played various positions, during his first season with the Wanderers he was known for his qualities as a center runner and scored 21 goals in two seasons for the club. In an FA Cup game against Sheffield United on February 1, 1890, he scored four goals.

In May 1890 he moved to Ardwick AFC, the predecessor of Manchester City , this transfer was viewed as an unusual step, since Ardwick was not a Football League club at the time and only joined the Football Alliance from 1891 . At Ardwick, the Englishman acted primarily as a striker. There he scored the first FA Cup goal in the club's history on October 4, 1890, in the style of a hat trick .

In 1892, the Ardwick AFC joined the Football League as a founding member of the Second Division . Weir was the top scorer in the club's first league season, scoring eight goals in 14 games. In January 1893 he returned to the Bolton Wanderers, where he played another 45 games in three seasons.

National team career

His performance at both Bolton Wanderers led to international recognition, so he made his debut for the English national team on March 2, 1889 in a 6-1 win over Ireland . Weir played his second and last international match against Scotland a month later . Some observers credited him with the second goal for the English, but when it was officially Billy Bassett was counted as the goalscorer.

Coaching career

He began his coaching career in 1909 at Glossop North End , three years later he left his home country and took over the coaching position of the Stuttgarter Kickers in Germany on April 28, 1911 . However, his commitment did not last long and in October of the same year the paths parted again.
