David Statnik ( Upper Sorbian Dawid Statnik ; born June 15, 1983 ) is a Sorbian politician and has been chairman of the Sorbian umbrella organization Domowina since March 2011 .

Life

Statnik, who comes from Ralbitz , has been on the national board of Domowina since 2009. He was proposed by his predecessor Jan Nuck and elected by the 15th Annual General Meeting, which took place on March 26, 2011 in Uhyst an der Spree , with 90.1% of the votes, making him the second youngest Domowina chairman to date after Paul Nedo . Jan Nuck was no longer at the head of the organization after eleven years.

The election of the new chairman came in the middle of a structural debate in the Sorbian institutional landscape. Before the election, Statnik declared that it would “not just turn things around”, but rather act as a mediator between the various interests. He expects the German majority to recognize the Sorbs and their culture as added value.

After two years as honorary chairman, Statnik was re-elected in 2013 at the 16th General Meeting of Domowina in Werben with 138 of 143 votes. Since then he has been the full-time chairman. In 2017 he was re-confirmed in office. Since 2016 he has also been a member of the Bautzen district council , where he moved up to the district council via a list of the Serbske wolerske zjednoćenstwo / Sorbian voters' association . After joining the CDU , he was re-elected to the district council in May 2019.

David Statnik is married and has three children. He worked as a stage master in the Sorbian National Ensemble until 2013 , was active in the Sorbian youth association Pawk and was involved in the Sorbian Artists Association .
