Dawtaschen  ( Armenian Դավթաշեն ) is one of the twelve districts of Yerevan , the capital of Armenia .

Overview

The right bank of Hrazdan located adjacent Dawtaschen in the southwest to the district  Adschapnjak and southeast to the district Arabkir . In the north Dawtaschen borders the province of Kotayk .

With an area of ​​6.47 km² (2.9% of the area of ​​Yerevan) Dawtaschen is the second smallest district of Yerevan. Dawtaschen is unofficially divided into neighborhoods, including Dawtaschen, Norddawtaschen, and Hujsi Awan. The main streets of the district are Sasna-Zrer Street, Tigran-Petrosian Street, Pirumjan Street, Aghababjan Street and Anastas-Mikoyan Street. The district administration is located on Pirumjanstrasse. A large rectangular public park on Pirumjan Street separates the first and second apartment blocks from Dawtaschen.

The district has twice been named the best of the twelve districts of Yerevan. In 2012 and 2013, the performance of the public services of the districts of Yerevan was evaluated.

The Directorate for Passports and Visas of the Armenian Police and the Ministry of Civil Protection are located in Dawtaschen .

history

The area of ​​today's Dawtaschen was known as Arajin gjugh ( Armenian Առաջին գյուղ 'First Village' ) until the 1930s  . It belonged to the newly formed Shahumyan Rajon northwest of Yerevan. On the 1000th anniversary of the national  epic Daredevil from Sasun , the place was given its current name in 1939.

With the steady development of Yerevan during the Soviet Union , the area of ​​the city was expanded to include the suburbs and surrounding areas. Several bridges were built over the Hrasdan, connecting the Shahumyan Raion with the center of the city of Yerevan. During the 1970s, the village of Dawtaschen officially became part of the Armenian capital, Yerevan.

In 1984 the Soviet Executive Committee of Yerevan allocated an area of ​​223 hectares in Dawtaschen for the construction of residential areas.

After the administrative division of Soviet Armenia in 1986, today's districts of Adschapnyak and Dawtaschen belonged to the Mashtots district.

After Armenia gained independence from the Soviet Union, Yerevan was divided into twelve administrative areas, including Dawtaschen, by the 1996 Administrative Division of the Republic Act.

The first mayor of Dawtaschen was Ruben Geworgjane, who was in office from 1996 to 1999. He was followed by Surik Ghukasjan (1999–2008) and Artur Geworgjane (2008–2012). Ruslan Baghdasarjan from the Republican Party of Armenia  has been the mayor of Dawtaschen since 2012.

Demographics

At the 2011 census, the Dawtaschen district had a population of 42,380 (4% of the Yerevan population). For 2016 a population of around 42,500 was officially estimated (10th place out of the 12 districts of Yerevan).

Dawtaschen is mainly inhabited by Armenians who belong to the Armenian Apostolic Church . The Holy Martyrs Church, consecrated in 2003, is the only church in the district.

Library No. 40, which was opened in 1996, and the “ Avet Terterjan ” art school, which opened in 1993, are located in Dawtaschen .

The film studio  Armenfilm  and the channel Armenia TV of  the PanArmenian Media Group are based in Dawtaschen.

A memorial for the Armenian victims of World War II and the  Nagorno-Karabakh conflict stands in the public Dawtaschenpark . In 2001, on the occasion of the 1700th anniversary of the Christianization of Armenia, a large Khachkar was set up in the park.

Dawtaschen is connected to the center of Yerevan by the Dawtaschen bridge, which was opened in 2000.

economy

The residents of Dawtaschen mainly work in small and medium-sized companies. There are about 300 small and medium-sized retail stores, restaurants and service providers.

The Arax factory for metal structures is a large industrial company that has existed in Dawtaschen since 1984.

education

In 2017 there were five preschool kindergartens, seven public schools and the Armenian Law Academy opened in 2014 .

Sports

There are many sports centers in Dawtaschen, including:

  • the Yerevan handball and team sports school for children and youth, opened in 1993
  • the Dawtaschen chess school, opened in 2013
  • the Olympic training complex Olympavan , opened in 2015.
  • the Reebok Sports Club Armenia, opened the 2017th
