Erebuni ( Armenian Էրեբունի վարչական շրջան Erebuni wartschakan schrdzhan ) is one of the twelve districts of Yerevan , the capital of Armenia . It is located southeast of the city center by the Erebuni fortress . The name Yerewans is derived from the ancient Erebuni.

Erebuni borders in the west on the district of Schengawit , in the north on the districts Kentron , Nork-Marasch and Nor Nork , in the east on the province Kotajk and in the south on the district Nubaraschen .

Erebuni has an area of ​​48 km² (21.52% of the area of ​​Yerevan), of which 29 km² are residential and commercial buildings. Erebuni is the largest district in Yerevan in terms of area. The district is unofficially divided into quarters: Nor Aresch, Saritagh, Wardaschen, Muschawan, Werin Dschraschen and Nor Butania. Erebuni is a highly industrialized district of Yerevan with many large factories. The district is mainly inhabited by low-income Yerevans.

Antiquity

Archaeological evidence shows that the Urartian fortress of Erebuni was built in 782 BC. It was built on the Arin-Berd hill in the area of ​​today's Erebuni district on the orders of King Argišti I to serve as a fortress and citadel against the attacks from the North Caucasus.

After Armenia was annexed to the Soviet Union, the administrative area of ​​Yerevan was steadily expanded. So the ancient regions of Erebunis, known as Arin-Berd , came to Yerevan.

The first 60 families to settle in this area were survivors of the Armenian genocide who escaped from Bithynia in western Armenia . In 1925 they founded the Nor Butania neighborhood. As a result of the Armenian repatriation process, Armenian migrants from Syria , Lebanon , Greece , France , Bulgaria and Egypt settled in the districts of Nor Aresch and Wardashen in the 1950s and 1960s .

Muschawan and Werin Dschraschen were originally villages on the eastern foothills of Yerevan, which were incorporated in 1995.

On August 8, 1991, the area of Lenin Raion was renamed Erebuni by a resolution of the Armenian National Assembly . In 1996, Yerevan was divided into twelve districts. In 1997, the former Lenin district and parts of Ordzhonikidze district were added to the Erebuni district .

Demographics

At the 2011 census, the Erebuni district had a population of 123,092 (11.61% of Yerevan's population). In 2016, the population was officially estimated at around 126,500 (4th place in Yerevan).

Until 1988 there was an Azerbaijani minority of 3000 inhabitants in Erebuni . As a result of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict , the majority of the Azerbaijani minority moved to Azerbaijan .

Erebuni is predominantly inhabited by Armenians who belong to the Armenian Apostolic Church . The Church of Saint Mesrop Maschtoz has been under construction since 2004 .

Culture

Erebuni has many public libraries including Library No. 3 "Okro Okrojan" (founded in 1937), Library No. 10 (founded in 1951), Library No. 11 (founded in 1960) and the Music Library (founded in 1966).

The library no. 3 was founded on 15 November 1937. Initially, it was located in the basement of the house at Hoktemberjanallee 1 (today Tigran-Metz-Allee 1). It has been on the ground floor of Hoktemberjanallee 59 since 1957. In 2004 it was named after the Georgian-Armenian poet and benefactor Okro Okrojan (1939–2003). The library has 500 m² of floor space and a reading room with 100 m² and 50 reading spaces. There are around 500,000 books.

The library no. 10 was created in 1997 by the merger of the libraries no. 10 and no. 12. The original library no. 10 was founded in 1953 in the quarter Tscharbach. She later moved to the Eisenbahnkulturplast. In 1975 it was moved to the Kulturhaus in Nor Aresch 24. In 1985 the library moved to Stiller-Don-Straße 13.
