Dead Space is a video game developed by EA Redwood Shores for Windows , PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 . It is a third-person shooter from the genre survival horror in a science fiction scenario. The player takes on the role of the marine or communications engineer Isaac Clarke, who was stranded as part of a repair crew on the USG Ishimura mining spaceship . The game was the cornerstone of the Dead Space franchise .

overview

Electronic Arts first announced Dead Space in September 2007. EA Redwood Shores Studios in California were responsible for the development , where The Godfather (2006) and The Simpsons - The Game (2007) were also created. The aim was to develop a video game that would stand out due to its detailed graphics and futuristic environment. Dead Space was produced by Glen Schofield .

The game's trailers caused a stir, especially with the soundtrack and graphics. Unlike in most other games, you don't just have to shoot the opponent, but rather sever body parts in order to put opponents out of action.

Gameplay

The player slips into the role of communications engineer Isaac Clarke, who is stranded on the mining spaceship USG Ishimura and has to find out what happened to the missing crew. Right from the start, the player finds himself in a futuristic world. The action is largely explained by audio / video logs of the missing crew members, which the player finds during the game.

Furthermore you have to fight against aliens, so-called Necromorphs , who have overrun the whole ship.

In individual game sections, the player must also move through weightlessness or vacuum and fulfill mission objectives.

Dead Space also includes RPG elements. The player has the opportunity to buy equipment and optimize items and properties from machines. Saving is done manually at storage stations.

action

The engineer Isaac Clarke, played by the player, is on the way to the USG Ishimura mining spaceship with the repair spaceship USG Kellion in order to repair its communications systems after contact with Ishimura has been lost. Shortly before arrival, the crew of the Kellion noticed that no lights were switched on on board the Ishimura. The team encounters aggressive beings on board.

Later, Isaac is supposed to repair the Ishimura and find out why the Ishimura crew cannot be found and what happened on board. To do this, Isaac collects the captain's rig , a type of body implant that records the wearer's experiences, at the infirmary . In addition, Isaac finds many sound and text recordings that tell the past events.

The events began after the so-called red marker was found in the mining colony on Aegis VII . This emits broadband (EM) waves that have a physical and psychological influence on living tissue. At first, all miners believed in an alien artifact . A similar object was found on earth 200 years ago, and the Unitologists sect formed to worship it. It quickly gained great economic and political influence.

Spaceships

  • USG Ishimura - Planetcracker- class mining spacecraft . The first larger spaceship with Shockpoint propulsion and the largest ship in its class, flies faster than light . Due to the long range, important for raw material extraction in distant star systems. Intended to split entire moons and smaller planets and exploit the raw materials they contain. It pulls huge chunks (several hundred square kilometers in size) into orbit and below with several tractor beams. Now smaller chunks are pulled further into the spaceship, crushed even further and separated into the individual elements in a blast furnace. The USG Ishimura is the main location of the first game.
  • USC Kellion - “Wai-Lao” class repair spaceship . On the way to Ishimura to repair the communications equipment. Will be badly damaged when approaching Ishimura and later completely destroyed when attempting to restore the systems. If you take a closer look at the credits, you will discover a Wai Lao among the contributors.
  • USM Valor - military spaceship. Waiting behind an asteroid, apparently for a certain signal. Is infected with the necromorphs by an escape capsule from the Ishimura and then falls unchecked into their shell. This can be seen impressively from the AAS cannon 48.

Characters

  • Isaac Clarke - communications engineer , en route to USG Ishimura , played character
  • Zach Hammond - Security Officer, Isaac's superior, and tour leader to Ishimura
  • Kendra Daniels - tech specialist who comes to Ishimura with Isaac and Hammond
  • Corporal Chen and Corporal Johnston - The pilots of the USC Kellion with whom Isaac and his team come to Ishimura
  • Dr. Terrence Kyne - The Ishimura's senior science officer, is hiding in the VIP security rooms
  • Nicole Brennan - Isaac's friend and assistant doctor on the Ishimura
  • Captain Benjamin Mathius - The captain of the Ishimura, and also a unitologist

  • Dr. Elisabeth Cross - Audiologs by Dr. Elisabeth Cross, the friend of Jacob Temple
  • Dr. Challus Mercer - Scientist aboard the Ishimura, obsessed with Necromorphs and mentally insane

You can learn more about Temple and Cross in the Animated Issues , which were published by EA on a regular basis before the game was released, as the issues revolve around their experiences. You can find out more about the couple in the anime prequel " Dead Space: Downfall ", which was released on DVD and Blu-Ray at the same time as the game.

successor

In autumn 2009 the prequel Dead Space: Extraction was released for the Wii , which can also be downloaded from the PSN store with the limited edition of Dead Space 2 . It is a rail shooter that illuminates the events on the colony of Aegis VII.

The sequel, Dead Space 2, was originally scheduled to appear on January 27, 2011 with a USK-18 release. However, the Bavarian Ministry of Social Affairs filed an objection to this release and thus suggested a re-examination. The USK decided again for a USK 18 of this slightly cut version. Due to the re-examination, the original date could not be met, whereupon the game was postponed to February 3, on January 27, 2011 EA announced in a press release that this date could not be met and that Dead Space 2 in Germany "By the beginning of March at the latest" appear. As in the first part, the player takes on the role of Isaac Clarke again. There is also a multiplayer mode. The game ties in with the first part. In contrast to its predecessor, the protagonist Isaac Clarke is equipped with better equipment, which also includes steerable rocket boots for excursions into weightlessness. You can now simply look at spaceships from the inside by flying through weightlessness in rocket boots.

limited edition

EA has released a limited edition of 1000 copies of the game. The package consists of the game itself, the animated film "Dead Space: Downfall", a bonus DVD, an art book, a lithograph and the Dead Space comic. The film is now also available separately on DVD and Blu-Ray. Customers who bought the game during the first two weeks also had the opportunity to download two additional suits online: the “Obsidian Suit” for the PlayStation 3 and the “Elite Suit” for the Xbox 360.

Website No Known Survivors

On August 22nd, 2008 the website "No Known Survivors" was launched, which offered the inclined visitor an opportunity to discover the world of Dead Space. The site covers two stories, each divided into four chapters. These chapters consist of 3D animations, voice recordings, original videos and many other interactive components. The site is less like a typical real-time game and more like an adventure game for the PC.

Starting on August 25, 2008 and ending in the week the PC game was released, a new Necromorph part was activated every Monday, which allowed the visitor to follow the story on No Known Survivors. After the "main game" was released, 19 players won third prize: a copy of the game on a platform of their choice. Nine runners-up won the limited collector's edition of the game, and one grand prize winner won the limited collector's edition and a life-size replica of Isaac's level three work helmet.
