Dear John Letter is a post-rock band from Augsburg . The name of the group comes from the term Dear John letter , which is widespread in the Anglo-American language area, for a farewell letter from a partner in life, which means the end of the relationship.

history

In 2005 the members of Dear John Letter , some of whom already knew each other from other formations, met in a rehearsal room in Augsburg. They soon published their first recordings on the MySpace music portal , and in 2007 the first record was released, EP2007 .

From some song sketches that were still unfinished at that time, e.g. Aventiure | Pearly Gates , the following year became the debut album Between Leaves | Forestal compiled.

Based on the distribution of Dear John Letter, the influence of social networks and weblogs on the level of awareness of local music groups can be traced: While they were initially only active in the Augsburg area, the EP EP2007 quickly found nationwide approval, on the one hand due to the possibility of using the Internet to hear all songs in advance free of charge, on the other hand because of the artwork , which also superficially differentiated the group from similar performers and which is also seen in most online reviews as part of the "total work of art" Dear John Letter.

With the title “Newcomer of the Month May 2008” by the music magazine Visions , the band also gained notoriety among a larger audience for the first time outside of the Internet.

All of the sound carriers were initially produced and distributed entirely by the band itself. The elaborate artwork is also designed in-house; so is the cover of the debut album Between Leaves | Forestal, for example, was sewn together from black cardboard, while that of EP EP2007 consists of cut book pages.

On October 9th, 2008 Dear John Letter announced their collaboration with the independent label Labelship in an email to buyers of their recordings . According to their own statement, this enables the band to release vinyl records for the first time . The album Between Leaves | Forestal is already available as a record.

The second album Part & Fragment has been sold at concerts since May 12, 2010 . Since October 15, 2010, it has been distributed worldwide via labelship.

style

The quintet names Oceansize , Mogwai and Sigur Rós as their musical role models . The songs are typically post-rock between 3 and 13 minutes long, but Martin Fischer's singing is a central component of the music, which, in conjunction with the hypnotic sound structures and the mostly thoughtful lyrics of the group, create a melancholy mood:

"Finally time erases time, and all I can do is hide."

- Clearing / Leaving

With the second album Part & Fragment , Dear John Letter began to turn away from the mere post rock of earlier years and took other influences, such as Led Zeppelin , into their music.
