A textile blanket is a piece of fabric that is woven or cut to size according to the intended use , which, as the name suggests, covers something. It is most frequently used as a warm blanket and as a tablecloth. Blankets differ in their design, strength and usability.

material

Blankets are often made of wool ("wool blanket") and other heat-storing materials. Sometimes blankets are also sewn together and then filled with soft material. A non-textile blanket is composed of skins fur blanket .

A special blanket is the "blanket" , which is widespread in Central Europe and is filled with down , feathers or sheep's wool , as well as other natural or synthetic materials (see bedding or duvet ). In English-speaking countries like the USA, on the other hand, you traditionally lie between two tightly stretched sheets with a blanket on top. In Great Britain , the covered duvet is spreading more and more. In Switzerland , too , the term duvet is often used for duvet (according to Duden, also colloquial duvet, feather or comforter).

Quilt (decorative blanket)
  • A duvet is used as a cover for sleeping. For sleeping blankets, voluminous, roughened, fitted rough fabrics with the highest possible degree of air inclusion are used.
  • A duvet is used without a top sheet or sheet, as the duvet cover can be easily removed and washed. In Switzerland , the term “Nordic sleeping” is also used for this.
  • A plaid (living room, travel blanket) is usually woven from noble hair (for example camel hair ), wool ( carded yarn ) or acrylic ( high- pile yarn ) .
  • The tablecloth can be used to protect high-quality table surfaces such as wood or marble, or for design reasons.
  • A bedspread is used to cover beds.
  • The blanket should be as fluffy as possible. A well-known wearer of such a blanket is Linus from the comic series The Peanuts .
  • The quilt is a mostly handmade decorative blanket.
  • Cotton wick yarn is used for the packing or ironing blanket.
  • A rescue blanket is an extremely thin, tear-resistant, waterproof and heat-reflecting film that is used for first aid .
  • The hospital blanket is used as an underlay or against heat loss by rescue services and fire services.
  • A horse or cattle blanket is a blanket that is supposed to protect the animal from the elements . The cattle blanket is made of a cotton fabric , of shredded wool or of coarse yarn . The weft thread is usually roughened. Ties that make it possible to hide the usually fine-thread chain inside the fabric are popular. These are double weave, as well as cross twill and atlas .
The sweat blanket is placed on the horse after riding to draw the sweat away from the horse's body. The saddlecloth is placed under the saddle to protect the horse's back from chafing and pressure points (the photo on the right shows a Western saddlecloth).
