Dedham is a place and a civil parish in the Borough of Colchester in northeast Essex , England.
geography
It is on the River Stour and Black Brook on the Essex and Suffolk border . The Dedham Old River runs east of the parish. The nearest town to Dedham is 5.5 km southeast of the small market town of Manningtree . Dedham is approximately 12 km northeast of Colchester and 75 km south of Norwich . The districts of The Heath and Lamb Corner belong to the community.
Dedham is the namesake for the Dedham Vale , an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB = " Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty "). The area extends approximately 22 km (14 miles) from Dedham in the east to Wormingford in the west.
Personalities
- John Constable (1776–1837), landscape painter. Constable's family lived in the neighboring town of East Bergholt , and he attended Dedham Grammar School . Many of his pictures were taken in "Constable Country", the area around Dedham, such as the Dedham Mill , which his father owned.
- William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891), American soldier , one of the best-known generals of the Civil War . His ancestors emigrated to Massachusetts in the 1630s , where they also founded a town called Dedham.
