East Bergholt is a municipality ( civil parish ) in District Babergh in the county of Suffolk in England , just north of the border with Essex .

East Bergholt is located in the valley of the River Stour , the Stour Valley. The closest town is Manningtree , Essex. The next train station is also there. The site is 10 miles (16 km) north of Colchester and approximately 8 miles (13 km) south of Ipswich .
Attractions
- Church of St. Mary the Virgin with a special belfry. The bells are mounted in an unusual way; they are not hanging from a yoke, as is generally the case, but are attached to their crown in a standing position. They are operated by people standing next to the bells.
The five bells (A, G, F #, E, and D) together weigh 4¼ tons.
Town twinning
East Bergholt has a partnership with Barbizon in France.
Personalities
- John Constable (1776–1837), landscape painter. Constable was born in East Bergholt. Many of his pictures were taken in "Constable Country", the area around the Stour, for example from the Dedham Mill , which his father Golding Constable owned.
