The Defiance was the third steamship to sail on the Thames between London and Margate and was the first to sail on the Rhine .

history

The Defiance was powered by a 2-cylinder steam engine. The cylinders had a diameter of 25.4 cm and performed a stroke of 91 cm. The machine was supplied with steam through a cylindrical kettle.

In October 1815 the ship was used as a parcel ship between London and Margate. In 1816 the Defiance was sold to operate in the Kingdom of the United Netherlands . The British naval officer William Wager transferred the ship via the island of Walcheren to Rotterdam in May 1816 and was received there by King William I and renamed the Prince of Orange . The steamboat sailed the Rhine all year round and docked in Cologne on June 12, 1816 . Originally it was planned that the Defiance should go to Frankfurt am Main . However, the strong current above Cologne prevented this and the ship had to turn back. At the end of 1816 the ship was brought to England for repairs, but there were disagreements between the operator and the Netherlands and the Defiance did not return and remained unused in England for several years.
