Emil Ritter von Förster (born October 18, 1838 in Vienna ; † February 14, 1909 there ) was an Austrian architect of historicism and the grandfather of Heinz von Foerster and Uzzi Förster .

Life

Emil Förster was the son of the ducal Saxon-Coburg court architect Ludwig Christian Friedrich Förster , who founded the Allgemeine Bauzeitung . He graduated from the Academic Gymnasium in Vienna before going to Berlin to study architecture . In 1860 he entered his father's studio and after his death in 1863 completed the buildings he had begun. The intended publication of a work on Tuscan architecture prompted Förster to go on a study trip to Italy. However, due to a lack of public interest, the project did not get beyond its beginnings.

Emil Förster returned to Vienna in 1866 and continued to publish the Allgemeine Bauzeitung together with his brother Heinrich . He began an extremely productive construction activity as an architect, before he was appointed by the Kaiser on February 3, 1895 to head the Department of Building Construction in the Ministry of the Interior . At the same time he joined the kk Hofbaukomitee and became a member of the city expansion commission. Förster founded an architecture studio within the department , in which not only important building projects were worked out, but other state projects were also monitored with regard to their integration into the surrounding area. As a result, he had a great influence on construction activity within the monarchy around 1900. However, despite his labor-intensive state position, he continued to work as a freelance architect.

Emil von Foerster died on February 14, 1909 in his apartment Maximilianplatz 15 (now Roosevelt Square 15-17) in which he had built in 1876/77 Palais Angerer to a paralysis of the heart . He was initially buried in the Matzleinsdorf Evangelical Cemetery , but in 1918 he was reburied in Purkersdorf .

The deceased left a widow, Amalie (née Braun), two sons, Max, lieutenant of the line, and Emil, engineer, and a daughter, Marie. Since Förster, by his own admission, was not unscrupulous enough in pursuing business opportunities, his estate was relatively modest.

His brother Heinrich Förster was also an architect. His sister Sophie was married to Theophil von Hansen .

meaning

Emil von Förster created large numbers of private residential buildings as well as public buildings. It is characterized by monumental and representative design, but also a well thought-out room arrangement and elegant interior designs. Stylistically, he preferred the Neo-Renaissance based on the Italian model, from which he seldom deviated. Among his most famous buildings are the Ringtheater and the Dorotheum in Vienna.
