Delmas is a city in the South African province of Mpumalanga . It is the seat of the community of Victor Khanye in the district of Nkangala .
geography
The city is located on the western edge of Mpumalanga, not far from the border with Gauteng Province . The area belongs to the Highveld . Townships in the northeast of Delmas are Delpark and Botleng ( Sesotho , German: the place of beauty). Delmas had 7,399 inhabitants at the 2011 census.
history
Delmas was founded in 1907 on the area of the Witklip Farm . Its owner was the French Frank Dumat, who baptized the city after the French de le mas , German roughly: "from the country house".
1985 began in Delmas the Delmas Treason Trial (about: " Treason Trial of Delmas"). 22 anti- apartheid activists, including three leading members of the United Democratic Front , were charged with treason . The trial was later moved to Pretoria and ended there in 1988. Eleven of the accused were sentenced to prison terms, which were overturned by the country's Supreme Court in 1989.
Economy and Transport
Delmas is the center of an area in which mainly corn, wheat and potatoes are grown and poultry is farmed. The Swedish mechanical engineering group Sandvik Mining and Construction operates its main workshop in Delmas for the underground coal mining technology used in the mines in the surrounding Karoo supergroup and the Karoo main basin . Occasionally, machines are also serviced here that are used on the Merensky Reef for mining and mining platinum and platinum metals .
The city is south of the M12 motorway, which connects Johannesburg with the N4 at Witbank . The Johannesburg – Maputo railway runs from west to east through Delmas. Passenger trains do not stop in Delmas.
