Dendrology

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dendrologie ( ancient Greek δένδρον dendron , tree 'and -logie ) is the study of the trees and shrubs ( woody customer ). As a branch of botany, it deals with woody plants , especially trees , shrubs and various climbing plants .

classification

Dendrology can be classified under botany and roughly divided into the areas of woody plants, shrubs and climbing plants. Since the woody plants are divided into very different taxa (subgroups) and, on the other hand, there are woody and non-woody plants in individual genera, the use of a strict dendrological classification is limited. The focus is on plants for wood use on the one hand and on use as ornamental plants in parks and gardens. Therefore, dendrology as a science is essentially only represented in forestry and horticultural institutions.

The Greek philosopher and natural scientist Theophrastus of Eresos is considered to be the founder of dendrology .
