The monument to Kaiser Wilhelm I and Empress Augusta is a memorial in Koblenz , in memory of the golden wedding of Kaiser Wilhelm I and Empress Augusta in 1879. It is located at the northern end of the former Rhine island of Oberwerth , north of the local outdoor pool.

history

In the 19th century, the training area of the 1st Rhenish Pioneer Battalion No. 8 , which had been stationed in Koblenz since 1824, was on the northern end of the former Rhine island of Oberwerth . An obelisk was erected here for the golden wedding of the imperial couple on June 11, 1879 as a sign of their solidarity . At the same time, 20,000 marks were collected on the feast day to set up a foundation that awarded scholarships to students from the Koblenz administrative district . In addition, on the occasion of the golden wedding, the city of Koblenz set up a “Wilhelm and Augusta Foundation for Jubilation Couples” and a “Koblenz Wilhelm and Augusta Foundation for Bride and Groom”. The custom of these foundations was maintained until the inflation of 1922/23 .

In 1986 the commander of the Pioneer Battalion 310 of the German Armed Forces stationed in the Rhine barracks in Koblenz wanted to restore the monument and move it to the Rhine facilities near the Kaiserin Augusta monument . But the plans were never implemented due to transport problems.

construction

The monument is a standing squat obelisk made of sandstone over a base made of foam lava , on which two medallions with the initials A (for Augusta) and W (for Wilhelm) are attached. In addition, the date of the golden wedding of the imperial couple, June 11, 1879, is recorded on the obelisk. The inscriptions are now partially weathered, the monument is almost entirely covered by thick bushes.
