Gail Dennise Thomas Mathieu (* 1951 ) is an American diplomat .

Life

Dennise Mathieu is from New Jersey and grew up in Newark and Westfield . She attended Antioch College , which she graduated with a bachelor's degree in Hispanic and Latin American studies in 1973 . In 1976 she received a Juris Doctor from Rutgers University . Mathieu began her career as an assistant attorney general in Newark and became a member of the New Jersey and District of Columbia Bar Associations . She married and had a child.

In 1978, Dennise Mathieu joined the US Department of State's diplomatic service . She worked in Paris , Geneva , Jeddah , Port of Spain and Santo Domingo and worked as an observer for the United States at UNESCO . She became Vice Director of the Pacific Islands Office in 1995 and joined the West African Affairs Office in 1997 as Vice Director . From 1999 to 2002 she was employed as deputy head of the US embassy in the Ghanaian capital Accra .

Mathieu took up the post of US Ambassador to Niger in 2002 , which she held until 2005. She campaigned with donors and governments for sustainable measures against the chronic food shortage in the country and for the expansion of trade relations between Niger and the United States. She then worked as a department head in the Office of International Organization Affairs at the US State Department. In 2007 Mathieu became the United States Ambassador to Namibia . Her agenda included strengthening democracy and human rights , combating HIV / AIDS and promoting the economy. Your mission ended in 2010.
