Depth is a computer game developed by Digital Confectioners and released for Microsoft Windows in 2014 . It is a multiplayer game where treasure divers compete against sharks.
Gameplay
The game is a first person shooter that takes place in underwater environments. Players can play either as divers or as sharks . Divers escort and defend an automated dive boat to collect sunken treasure. To do this, they can use firearms , harpoons , explosives, and other equipment that can be bought with collected treasures. The sharks can attack divers with different abilities. There are seven species of sharks ( white shark , tiger shark , mako shark , bull shark , hammerhead , thresher shark and Megalodon ) with different characteristics. They develop new skills ( evolutions ) by killing and eating divers. The game is won if the opposing players cannot revive themselves, the divers successfully bring the submersible to an extraction point or the sharks destroy the submersible. In addition to the online mode, you can also play against an artificial intelligence in single player mode .
development
Depth began production in 2009 as a student project. It was originally founded as a mod for Unreal Tournament 3 by a small development team led by Alex Quick from Killing Floor . Between 2010 and 2012 it was ported to the Unreal Engine and became a standalone game. However, development has stopped due to concerns about gameplay. In 2013, Digital Confectioners took over development and got the game ready for release.
publication
Depth was on 16 October 2014 for the pre-order in Steam set and -Store published on November 3, 2014. The expansion "The Big Catch" was released on December 16, 2014 and adds 2 new shark classes, 1 new map and a new game type called "Megalodon Mode".
reception
|
Depth received moderate to positive reviews. IGN described Depth as an ocean of tense and unique gameplay moments and praised the level and sound design of the game. Both the experience as a diver and as a shark are fast, fun and hectic. IGN criticized the lack of several game modes and the tight customization options of the game. This would not lead to sufficient long-term motivation. GameSpot is less positive and points out problems with texture quality, balancing and flaws in level design. GameSpot therefore hoped that future updates would fix bugs and add new content to help the game realize more of its potential.
Both Multiplayer.it and GameSpot state that the game negatively relies on the gameplay of the Left-4-Dead series. The deviantrobot site said that Depth is very similar to Evolve , but nonetheless unique in many ways. The Gamestar stresses the importance of team plays and the right equipment and skills and praises the atmosphere and scattering. A similar concept was later implemented in horror games like Dead by Daylight .
