Der Hauptmann von Köpenick is a German silent film from 1926 by Siegfried Dessauer with Hermann Picha in the title role.

action

It tells the story of the unemployed shoemaker Wilhelm Voigt , who was released from prison and who is no longer on his feet due to bureaucracy and arbitrariness, is always restricted by harassment and then becomes criminal again: He "organizes" the parade uniform of a captain, “requisitioned” some simple foot soldiers marching along the roadside and marched with them to the town hall of Köpenick in order to confiscate the city treasury as an ostensibly necessary measure of an upcoming checkout. Voigt is betrayed by a former cellmate and then arrested. He is supposed to serve four years in prison for "unauthorized wearing of a uniform, offenses against public order, deprivation of liberty, fraud and serious forgery", but thanks to a pardon from Kaiser Wilhelm II, he was released in August 1908. In contrast to the real story, however, a young couple in love plays an important role in this film adaptation, which the fake captain once helped. The two young lovers take in the old man, who has now become homeless and destitute again, to take care of him from now on.

Production notes

The Hauptmann von Köpenick was created in April and May 1926 in the Rex-Film-Atelier. The six-stroke with a length of 2067 meters passed film censorship on June 4, 1926 and was banned from young people. The premiere took place in the same month in Berlin's Primus-Palast.

Fritz Kraencke designed the film structures .

This film version is the first full-length feature film version of this extremely popular story, at least since Carl Zuckmayer 's play of the same name (1931) .

Reviews

Paimann's Filmlisten called the film a “cheerful reconstruction of a well-known criminal case” and summed up: “The subject suffers from a lack of uniformity created by the amalgamation of the present, narrative and memory, as well as from the additions of episodes and histories added to its extension. The presentation goes on, the photograph is generally satisfactory, featuring not given by the environment. "

"... no military satire, but a rough farce ..."
