The Lord of the Rings: The Conquest (Original title: The Lord of the Rings: Conquest ) is an action game from 2009, which is based on the Lord of the Rings film trilogy . It was developed by Pandemic Studios in collaboration with New Line Cinema and published by Electronic Arts . It was implemented for Windows, the PlayStation 3, the Xbox 360 and the Nintendo DS.

action

Frodo Baggins is supposed to destroy the One Ring by throwing it into the crater of Mount Doom in the land of Mordor. The Lord of the Rings: The Conquest shows the way to this goal from two perspectives. The player first chooses one of several possible framework actions in the form of a campaign and within this one of the two opposing sides. Based on this selection, he starts the game as a soldier in one of six factions in Middle-earth: Gondor, Harad, Isengard, Mordor, Rivendell or Rohan. In the “War of the Ring” campaign, the game plot roughly follows the battles of the film trilogy in their order. The "Rise of Sauron" campaign shows an alternate world story in which a mentally corrupted Frodo Baggins fails to destroy the One Ring and is then killed by the leader of the Ringwraiths, the Witch King of Angmar, whereupon the Dark Lord gains access to the Ring and gradually conquered Middle-earth.

Game principle and technology

Pandemic Studios developed a style and gameplay similar to that in Star Wars: Battlefront , although you don't level up the characters like in previous The Lord of the Rings games. In order to have a better overview of the battles and to be able to better see the actions of the characters, you play continuously in the 3rd person perspective and use 3 types of combat. You can choose between warriors, archers, scouts and wizards.

  • Close combat: with a sword, dagger or from a horse.
  • Long-range combat: by catapult, ballista or as an archer.
  • magic

The game consists of a campaign part and a multiplayer mode where the player can choose between good and bad. The Campaign of the Good begins with training in the final battle of the Alliance in the Second Age of Middle-earth. Then it follows battles from the films, where you fight , for example, with an Ent against Isengard , in Moria against the Balrog or in Minas Morgul . The evil campaign, an alternative scenario to the film plot, begins with the Nazgûl acquiring the One Ring from Frodo. During the conquest, the player slips into the roles of Mûmakil , trolls , Ents or even lastly in the roles of Sauron himself. In the multiplayer mode, you can conquer, capture the flag , hero death fights or ring bearer games with up to four players on one Play system.

The online mode, in which up to sixteen players could play at the same time, has not been available since March 16, 2010, as EA Games had closed the server due to too few users. Nevertheless, it is possible to use the multiplayer mode via the Tunngle platform . This platform allows players to connect to each other over the Internet using the game's LAN mode.
